- William G.Morgan was born in 1870 at Lock-port, New York. In 1891 Morgan entered Mt. Hermon Preparatory School in North field, Massachusetts, and it was there he developed a friendship with James A. Naismith, who was destined to be the originator of basketball. In 1894, after graduation, Morgan accepted the position of physical director of the Auburn, Maine YMCA and this is were the Story of Volleyball came about.
- The year was 1895 and physical director William
G. Morgan had a problem. The newly created game of basketball, while popular
with the kids, was proving to be too fast paced for the local bushiness men and older generation who would come around to the YMCA she he decided to create a game that a gentleman could play that didn't involved jumping or jolting. Morgan had a concept that it had to be a sport with a strong althetic impulse but not physical contact. so he borrowed existing ideas from sports. He took the ball from basketball, the net from Tennis and the use of hands and the surrounding walls from handballs and the game would be played in innings from baseball. Dr. Alfred Halstead a professor at Springfield college came up with the name "volleyball" for the sport and it would stick for years to come. The only rules changed are the amount of players on the field from unlimited to now 12 or 4 depending on the variation of volleyball you play .
